The Hockey News
It’s about time.
The Hockey News is devoting an entire magazine to women’s hockey – and two of the most recognizable players are on the cover of this month’s issue. Meghan Agosta, who plays for the Montreal Stars and Tessa Bonhomme, a defenceman for the Toronto Furies, both of the CWHL.
You’ll also know Agosta’s name from the 2012 IIHF Women’s Worlds in Burlington, Vermont. She scored the goal that sent the final into overtime, leading to a 5-4 gold medal victory for Canada over the U.S.
This issue of The Hockey News is long overdue. Women’s hockey has made enormous strides throughout the last twenty years, as one of the fastest growing sports in North America. I played my junior career for the London Devilettes and played against Agosta during all four of those years. During that time, we saw the PWHL develop immensely and watch many of our teammates move onto play hockey at the CIS and NCAA level.
It’s time to draw attention to more of our talented role models like Agosta and Bonhomme on a regular basis, like The Hockey News has chosen to do. But there needs to be a ripple effect. Often times, there is too much focus on negative stories in the media – we need more feel good stories like this issue has. Highlighting Agosta’s and Bonhomme’s success both on and off the ice will hopefully inspire young girls to find their passion in life and go for it. This shouldn’t happen once in a blue moon, women’s hockey should be featured in every issue.
And to all the young aspiring female hockey players out there, check out this magazine!
